The title for this exhibition was inspired by these lines from W. B. Yeat’s poem, Aedh wishes for the cloths of heaven:
“I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams.”
My childhood dream to be an artist was fulfilled much later in life in Australia, my adopted country, following my earlier career as a medical doctor in Singapore, where I was born. My current tenure as studio artist and tutor at the Tresillian Arts Centre since 2019 has given me much needed space and support to hone my skills and refine my artistic voice, for which I am truly grateful.
My art is a reflection of my inner and outer realities, an expression of my perceptions and lived experiences. It emanates from my heart, expressed through my two and three dimensional artworks, including paintings, sculpture, digital and kinetic mobile installations. Recently I have also explored using a variety of surfaces such as wood, canvas and rice paper for application of watercolour and ink.
I am inspired by nature and the human spirit. Finding beauty and fragility in both, I believe art heals and can be an instrument for change.
“Dream Boxes” is a series of small daily spontaneous artworks, made in response to a period of creative drought and depletion brought on by the vicissitudes of life. These little doodles paved the way for the creation of many works in this collection. My regular sketching habit underpins my current art practice.
All of humanity have been impacted by the pandemic which has radically altered our way of life and relationships. Works in the series “Love in the time of Contagion” attempt to explore some of those relationships that kept us going during such times.
Finally, the mobile installation features our endangered wildlife in Western Australia and “Sixty Seconds to Midnight” is a poignant reminder of the urgency to preserve what still remains for our future generations.
